Vaginal surgery
Vaginal surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery performed through a small incision made in the vagina. Vaginal surgery is commonly performed to repair the vaginal wall in the treatment of prolapse – an abnormal bulging of the womb (uterus), bladder and/or rectum into the vagina.
Vaginal surgery can be used for many different procedures such as:
-
Removal of the womb, especially when there is prolapse of the uterus (vaginal hysterectomy),
-
Repair of the front wall of the vagina for prolapse of the bladder (anterior repair)
-
Repair of the back wall of the vagina for prolapse of the rectum (posterior repair)
-
Surgeries for urinary incontinence (urethral sling surgery)

Are there any risks for vaginal surgery?

Just like any other surgical procedure, there are risks associated with vaginal surgery. This would include risks related to anaesthesia given for surgery, and the actual surgical procedure itself. The risk profile will also vary from patient to patient depending on the complexity of your underlying gynaecological condition and your other medical issues.
A/Prof Bindu Murali will discuss with you the risks and benefits specific to you and answer any questions you may have before the surgery. At the pre-operative visit, you will also be given detailed instructions on how to prepare for the surgery, what happens on the day of the surgery and what happens after the surgery.
